I am not a big fan of Chinese food. But Harvest Garden was really good. They are small establishment with a some good quality food. Food had good flavors and value priced!

Great Chinese for my entire family! We love it here! The family who owns it always friendly & efficient! You can't go wrong here!

Pretty decent, inexpensive Chinese food with great service. The family that runs this place is so nice. They deserve your business! Try the lunch specials. They are very generously sized and a great value!

I explained my order over the phone twice...he repeated it back correctly. It was two main dishes, two soups, and two spring rolls. My friend picked it up for me and they only had one order. It seemed wrong to him but it was the only one there. He came home with one dinner order that wasn't ours and when I called he claimed my friend said we didn't want the other dish and didn't offer to remake it or apologize. He lied to cover his ass because he knew he messed up. I know we all make mistakes but when he said that my friend lied when he never said a thing I knew I wouldn't be coming back here again.

Despite the fact that this place does not come off as a restaurant or take-out establishment, the quality is very good. Not easy to find a Chinese restaurant that you can trust. However, this is one of the.

I have eaten here 3-4 times. After trying the Almond Chicken and becoming incredibly sick later that day I will not be going back. Food wasn't bad when I normally ordered the General Tsos chicken. There was nothing that stood out besides being relatively inexpensive. I mean it was okay, but I wouldn't drive out of my way to have it. There are other places that when I crave I don't care how long it takes to get there I just want it. Overall a let down after I saw how busy it was while waiting for a pickup order.

Best Chinese food I've had! And the prices can't be beat! $4.50 combo specials are great and plenty of food. The only down sides I see are 1) the wait. After placing my order in the restaurant I waited 30 minutes for my food. 2) the restaurant building itself. Hole in the floor, tacky AC unit in the wall, awkward waiting area. But all things considered, great food and I will be back. (But this time I will call in my order......)

This is my new Chinese place! They have four combos that are $4.50 ALL DAY. Meat, rice, and an eggroll. Amazing deal. I love their sesame chicken (which also happens to be one of those combos). My only suggestion- order extra sauce on the side. They are really skimpy on the sauce

When the lady answered, I kind of understood what she was saying so I gave my order. From there on, I couldn't understand what she was saying at all and when I politely said so, she just started screaming the same thing repeatedly into the phone. I could tell it had something to do with the size I wanted, the price, or something related to food (I hope), and I'm usually very good at understanding what non-English speakers are trying to say, but I was completely lost. I told her I was canceling my order and hung up... I felt extremely guilty, but how can they expect to make money when the person answering the phone has pretty much no knowledge of the language their customers are ordering in?

I love this place! No reason to ever spend more than $10 for two people to be extremely full. I've tried the sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, almond chicken and chicken fried rice - love them all. They also have great wonton soup. The only thing I did not care for was the Lo mein - the noodles were crispy and I've never cared for crispy noodles.

  • Sarah C.

I have had their sweet and sour chicken multiple times. The food tastes good, but SO skimpy on the sauce. Every time I order, there isn't even enough sauce to coat each piece of chicken. I end up with a quarter of the chicken left with no sauce.

  • Julian B.

There is better Chinese. But this is a very solid takeout spot. Nice owner. I like their fried rice (chicken or shrimp) sesame chicken combo and almond chicken. As others hve mentioned, several $4.50 combos daily.

While the food is always good the wait time for it whether you call the order in or go in and order is unacceptable. today I called in my order 10 minutes before I left my home. I was told there would be a 10 to 15 minute wait. it turned out to be more like a 30 minute wait from the time I called in my order. Also when I originally called it in the person taking my order had to check with his parents to see if they had one of the items that I wanted. Because they do not take your name when you call in if you're picking up an order for someone else and don't know what they wanted you are in the position where you need to call that person to find out what was in the order. Granted this is a convenient location but with the extraordinarily long wait time I doubt I will be returning.

This is a little carry out place. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is decent and the prices very reasonable. My gripes are but two. First, call in your order. If you make the mistake of placing your order in person, they will stop taking your order to answer the phone and take somebody else's order. The first time the phone rang I let it slide. The second time the phone rang and the guy behind the counter reached for the phone I simply said "No. I'm here first, and you're taking my order first." I wouldn't think you'd need to point out the obvious, but I guess that's not the case. Second, the bell peppers are cut into massive pieces. Seriously -- who needs to deal with a pieces of green pepper that are the size of a quarter or a third of a pepper in cashew chicken? I find myself ordering things without peppers just so I don't have to take the time to cut them into more manageable sized pieces.

You cannot beat Gen Tso's chicken with fried rice for under $5. My wife is totally addicted now and she was initially VERY scared and sceptical of this dirty little place on the East side of WW. This place is kick ass, right down the street, and super cheap.

First off, thanks Amby M. I would have never eaten here if it wasn't for your review and pics. I was so surprised by my meal! It was the best chinese meal I have had in the area. I had the sesame chicken with chicken fried rice. The food was so fresh and full of flavor. The sauce was not watery at all. The portions were huge, and you could actually see pieces of chicken in the rice! I am so glad to have found a great chinese takeout place in the area!

Dinner for under $5. Their All-Day Specials are $4.50 + .27 = $4.77. The food is fresh. I like the General Tao's Chicken, the Pork or Chicken Chop Suey.

Few years back, place where I use to order and loved closed doors. We could not find another Chinese restaurant for a couple years that would match. Drive to Chicago(seriously?), like one of the reviewers suggested was and is not an option. Pros: place is clean, fast, excellent egg rolls, wonton. People are friendly, neighborhood loves them. Cons: food a bit bland, you d really need to make sure to mention spice level. Our favorites: Szechuan lo mein, general Tso. We have tried all places in surrounding area, if anybody offers something better, I ll be happy, but until then they have my undivided attention.

  • Dina B.

Ok so this is a total find. It's strictly carry out. I debated writing a review because I want to keep this secret all for myself. They are fast, they (I think) are family-owned, and seem so much better than even what used to be good Chinese in the area. Chinese was the thing until Thai came along and after that I lost my taste for it. But HG has renewed the love. The Singapore noodles are the best.

Basic Chinese food - had chicken chow mein - lots of veggies - chicken tender - nothing fancy but a STEAL at $4.50. Place is clean as a whistle - and counter person friendly enough.

Since it's within spitting distance of our home, for years my husband has often said offhandedly "Hey, we ought to try that place..." and my response was always the same, something along the lines of "Are you kidding me? Do you WANT food poisoning or szechuan rat pellets? Heck no." Because I'm not going to lie, from the outside this place looks like a DUMP. As the years went by, I wondered how it was able to stay in business, to be honest. Then I found Yelp, and in my desperate search for some decent Chinese, my old nemesis popped up again...with surprisingly popular reviews! I read on, my amazement and excitement growing...YES other people acknowledged it looked like a dump from the outside too! But the food was so tasty and inexpensive! And sometimes, you just have to take your fellow Yelpers' word for it and TRY IT. I dispatched the chef-husband to get us some lunch ("But you said you would never...") and to snag a menu (which I uploaded pictures of, since they lack a basic website). He reported back that it was extremely clean on the inside, with plenty of chairs to wait for your take-out and one little bitty table if you want to eat in for some reason. There was a mini-table with twenty-year-old magazines, but that's okay...I'd rather they spend money on their food than magazine subscriptions. He also said the proprietors were extremely friendly. He came home bearing a TON of food, bracing himself for the worst but hoping for the best (i.e. his wife literally eating her words). And I did. Ohhhh yes I did! We got an order of steamed dumplings which were delicious, although the chef-husband did NOT like the sauce it came with. Piping-hot and extremely filling. I ordered my old stand-by, sesame chicken (or rather the Lunch Special N-5 New York Sesame Chicken) and...oh my. The first bite was like a revelation. NO MORE DRIED-OUT DEEP-FRIED BITS OF SHOESTRING CHICKEN FOR THIS GIRL! It was almost like tempura, the crust was light and crunchy, the sweet-and-sour sauce was perfectly balanced, and the chicken tasted LIKE CHICKEN! Hot and juicy and plentiful. Praise to the Yelp gods, I HAVE FOUND MY SESAME CHICKEN!!! My husband ordered chicken pad thai, and adored his as well. I did take one bite; the pieces of chicken were huge and equally as juicy. YUM! As a previous reviewer mentioned, I almost don't want to write this review, I want to clutch Harvest Garden to my chest and scream "MINE! MINE!" like Daffy Duck in a cave full of gold. But this hidden gem does itself no favors with its...errr...curb appeal, so I'm happy to sing its praises for it.

Pretty good food here. I had the Almond Boneless Chicken and it was good. The chicken was breaded with a crispy crunch to it. The gravy was a bit salty for my liking but i'm not a big salt fan. I also had the Steamed Chicken Dumplings which were very good. I can definitely see myself eating here again.

Classic Chinese take-out. Good food fast and fresh in 10-15 minutes with a bit of an accent. I enjoy the egg foo yong, fried rice, wonton soup, actually pretty much everything I've tried. Admittedly I tend to order the same thing when I'm in the mood for Chinese take-out but doesn't everyone?

Horrible waiting room - literally feels like an old medical waiting room. Female owner is difficult to understand but her young son is completely fluent. Food is good - typical Chinese carryout. Almond chicken had a few dry pieces but overall was good.

Apparently there really isn't any Chinese in Birmingham besides Mountain King which gets really sad reviews. On the way from Ferndale to B'ham this place is right in the middle....my girl picked up takeout for us so I can only comment on the food. She did say that the family that runs this place was super friendly and the nicest take out experience she's ever had FYI. Since I'm over trying to find a decent General Tso's on this side of town I'm in search of a new staple for Chinese takeout. I took a shot and ordered their Korean Bulgogi with white rice and an eggroll, and my girl had the Chicken Kung Pao with veggie fried rice. First impressions, the Bulgogi was pretty good if not a little overpowering on the wine aftertaste but it was pretty tasty. The meat was a little stringy but I liked the flavors and the sesame seeds sprinkled over the meat. It was served with really fresh crisp lettuce leaves to make wraps I'm guessing. Their white rice is stickier and less dry than the norm which I liked also. But I really enjoyed the vegetable fried rice with the peas, carrots and snow peas. The Chicken Kung Pao isn't something I'm really familiar with and while my girl liked it, the taste of the sauce wasn't my favorite. The eggroll was a bust too...I just didn't dig the flavors of the filling. She asked me if I'd come here again...and I think, yes, definitely but I'd order differently next time and I'd want to try their crab Rangoon over the eggroll next go around.

It was really hard for me to find a Chinese take away place I would go back to. But something told me to try this rink-a-dink shop and I was so glad I did. Its a very small place with no inside seating. Almost drove by it the first time. I got one of the specials (Sesame Chicken) and it totally satisfied my craving for tasty, salty, and classic American Chinese food! Theres nothing really special about the food its just doesnt take like the other crap we've been trying to scarf down at other places. The lunch special had enough for me to save half for dinner (but I dont think I eat very much). The staff is friendly. Took my man here and he also agrees this will be our new Chinese food place joint restaurant take away whatever. :-)

Nothing bad to say. Good food, very well priced. We had lemon chicken, curry chicken, and garlic chicken. No combos, just quarts to share. It came with plenty of rice and fortune cookies. Nothing wowed me, I got exactly what I expected.

Wasn't impressed. The food, that I had; simply wasn't good. Similar to grocery store frozen chinese food. The spring rolls taste like they've been around since last spring. The fried rice was... not good and while they do offer bulgogi it isn't authentic. I've had bulgogi at korean restaurants and this pan asian restaurant doesn't get it right. I won't be returning... I'd rather make the long journey to Chin's in Redford and treat it like a happening instead of wondering what happened.

Super reasonably priced and tasty as well! My hunan shrimp was a little on the salty side but hey, you know what you're ordering with chinese takeout.

This is the Mitt Romney of Chinese food... boring, bland and tasteless. If you want to know what solid Air taste like, go to this place. I ordered from here, thought I would give it a shot, since Ive driven by it thousands of times but never stopped. I wish I would have kept on going. Everything had ZERO taste to it. The eggroll was just there... a vehicle for some soggy vegetables inside. The fried rice was brown, but since brown isn't a flavor, that's all you really got, was brown. I put 2 packets of soy sauce on there to help give it flavor, but the the blackhole of blandness sucked any flavor from the soy sauce into its vortex and never let it go. The 2 entrees that were ordered had one thing in common. The same thing that the other things had, blandness. I was thinking, how can you make something not taste of anything? What do you have to do to make it taste of NOTHING. The General Tso chicken was lightly sauced, but the sauce had no flavor, all I could get was a slight tingle of heat, but again, heat isn't flavor. I thought it was me, but the other person who ate with me thought the same thing. Makes me wonder about the reviews on here, especially the one who calls herself a food snob. If she is considering herself snobby, she needs to get Ann Romney snobby real quick. Most Chinese food is pretty pedestrian when it comes to taste and originality (since it is Americanized), but this pedestrian got ran over in traffic and never got up. I would rather go to Lims in Clawson and they aren't good either, but at least they have something called Flavor (good or not). Also, I should have thought twice when you see a Chinese place putting Thai food on their menu. Really? Thats like ordering a hamburger from a Chinese restaurant. Why would you order that, they arent going to do it very good. Go to a real Thai restaurant and get food.. and stop ordering Pad Thai, thats like the Almond Boneless Chicken of Thai dishes. Live outside the bubble of mundane you have created. I would give it 1.5 stars, just because they did give big portions, but if you like big portions and no flavor, come here... if you want real Chinese food... drive to Chicago and go to Chinatown and get the real deal with tons of flavor.

I think the owners are paying people for good reviews or creating fake accounts. The food was TERRIBLE, I had the sesame chicken and it tasted as if it had been frozen for years. Could taste that it had been freezer burnt before unthawed. The eggrolls were mediocre, nothing to rave about. And the rice was also mediocre. Second, I ordered the no 5, sesame chicken combo. I arrive at the janky location to find out there are "daily specials" one being an S5 - New York sesame chicken. The employee later clarified it is exactly the same as the no. 5 but a tad spicier .... And a $2.00 difference ... THANK YOU for informing me about the deal over the phone, NOT. I will not return and have told others not to eat at this establishment.

Good, cheap, fast. Two dinners + soup ready in 10 minutes, for just under $17. The experience: We were looking for a place we could get relatively inexpensive Chinese to go and came across this place thanks to Yelp. We ordered sans menu and were happy with the results. Don't dine in. There's only one table with folding chairs--not exactly a lovely dining experience. We'll be back for yummy, cheap Chinese to go!

I was skeptical of Harvest Garden in the beginning.. mostly because of the sign advertising $3.99 Chinese food as I drove past on Woodward day after day. $3.99? This can't be good... We decided to take the plunge and ordered carry-out. We ordered at the restaurant because we didn't have a menu (if Harvest Garden sets up a simple website with an online menu... it would be highly beneficial). But once we arrived, the lady at the counter was cordial and quite helpful. We went with the "Family Special": Almond Chicken, Steak Kow, Chicken Fried Rice, 2 Egg Rolls and Wonton Soup... all this for under $20!!! I was still weary... but this turned out to be pretty darn good Chinese take-out. The almond chicken was crispy and delicious, woton soup had tasty, fresh greens, the egg roll had delicious flavor and the Steak Kow was much better than your standard steak 'n veggie filler buffet fair. The helpful woman encouraged us to take a couple menus (included the flier that lists the $3.99 ALL DAY specials ... which does include the Almond Chicken... great deal!). This is a great option for carry-out. They have potential to grow from an authentic hole-in-the-wall to something great (get a website, maybe do a little interior/exterior makeover and add a few more dine-in tables). Try them out!

Not the best but far from the worst. Food was unremarkable and lacked any real depth or character. But if you needed Chinese food and happened to be passing this place it would suffice.

One of the best and cheapest Chinese restaurants around! (A dying breed, by the way...) Why go to some fancy schmancy over $10 a dish restaurant, when you can get their lunch special for just about $4?! Your best bet is take out, but we have on occassion eaten there at their one table, which they are more than happy to accomodate. Don't expect PF Chang decor though, do expect some of the best Chinese food you'll ever have!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
